The Cashless Reality
China is essentially a cashless society. Mobile payment through Alipay and WeChat Pay dominates—not just at restaurants and shops, but also metro stations, street vendors, and hotels. As a foreigner, you'll need to set up at least one of these apps before arriving.
The good news: Both apps now support international credit cards, making it easier than ever for foreign tourists.
Alipay for Foreigners
Alipay is the most widely accepted mobile payment app in China.
How to Set Up
- Download Alipay app (App Store / Google Play)
- Switch language to English
- Select "Tourist" registration path
- Scan your passport and complete verification
- Link your international Visa, Mastercard, or Amex card
- Add funds to your digital wallet (required for some merchants)
Usage Tips
- Look for the Alipay QR code at checkout
- Open the app, tap "Scan" and scan the merchant's code
- Confirm the amount and enter your payment password
- Some merchants may require you to load money to the app balance
WeChat Pay for Foreigners
WeChat Pay is integrated with WeChat messenger, used by over a billion Chinese users.
How to Set Up
- Download WeChat app
- Switch to English interface
- Go to Settings → Payment → Add Card
- Complete verification with passport
- Link your international card
When to Use WeChat vs Alipay
- Alipay: Better for tourists, wider acceptance, more English-friendly
- WeChat Pay: Useful for WeChat-based services, some exclusive discounts
Cash in China
While cashless is preferred, you should still bring some cash:
- RMB (¥) is the currency
- Exchange at airports, hotels, or banks
- ATMs accepting international cards are common in cities
- Rural areas may still require some cash
- Small tips are not customary (but appreciated)
Credit Card Acceptance
International credit cards are NOT widely accepted in China. Many smaller merchants, restaurants, and shops only take Alipay or WeChat Pay. International cards mainly work at:
- Large hotels (foreign-owned chains)
- High-end restaurants
- Large shopping malls
- Trip.com bookings
Bottom line: Set up Alipay before arrival—it's essential.
